Our History

Dr. Robert Rosen founded Healthy Companies in 1988. Our mission: to partner with CEOs and executive teams to build high-performing organizations. In 1990, with a six-year multi-million dollar research grant from the MacArthur Foundation, we began conducting extensive research into the characteristics of successful CEOs and healthy companies.

Over the years, Healthy Companies has interviewed or worked with more than 250 CEOs from 34 countries, including AT&T, Booz Allen Hamilton, ING Group, Macy’s, MedStar Health, New York Life, Northrop Grumman, Singapore Airlines, Toyota and many others. We have built an extensive knowledge base of leadership best practices, and developed a wide array of consulting services and electronic products grounded in our research. And we have published our findings in the books The Healthy Company (1991), Leading People (1996), Global Literacies (2000) and Just Enough Anxiety (2008). The Catalyst, written in collaboration with the Darden Business School, came out in 2009.

Healthy Companies has become a global thought leader on CEO and executive leadership and the human strategies that create great organizations. Through executive coaching, performance-oriented learning and development and consulting, we help CEOs communicate and execute their agenda throughout the organization. We advise executive teams on how to navigate change, grow the business, execute strategy and create an enduring legacy. We help top leaders build companies that are profitable, sustainable and healthy.

Our Name

The name Healthy Companies International has special meaning for us.

"Healthy is the optimal state of all living systems—the state of being in which we are able to perform our best and reach our highest potential. It signifies balance, vitality and strength. When we are healthy, we can move forward with ease, seize opportunities, adapt to changing circumstances and overcome obstacles to accomplish our goals.

"Companies" reflects our commitment to working with communities of people bound by a common purpose and committed to adding something of value to our world. It highlights the critical role companies play in shaping global trends and creating innovative solutions that enhance the quality of our lives. Companies of all sizes and sorts put people to work, fuel economic growth and lead change. Their high-profile status provides us with lessons on what works—and what doesn't—as we all strive to realize our dreams.

"International" defines the scope of our work. It also captures our point of view on the nature of business in the 21st century. Today, all business is global, no matter where it is located. With globalization comes the need to better understand each other—across countries and cultures, beyond borders and beliefs. It is our responsibility to think and act in ways that benefit the global community.

Our name describes our purpose. At Healthy Companies International, we strive to help businesses reach their highest potential in ways that ensure their longevity while protecting the lives of people and communities around the world.
